A Pennsylvania woman is facing multiple criminal charges after investigators accused her of intentionally starting a fire inside a shared residence, an incident that forced her roommate to flee the home as smoke filled the building.
Police said the fire occurred on July 22, 2026, at a residence in the 400 block of 12th Avenue in Altoona. The blaze reportedly began in a bedroom after the suspect allegedly set the roommate’s mattress on fire.
Smoke alarms alerted the people inside the home, allowing the roommate to react quickly. Authorities said the roommate escaped the immediate danger while another occupant helped extinguish the flames before firefighters arrived.
Fire Investigators Determine Blaze Was Intentional
Once the fire was under control, investigators examined the scene to determine how it started. Their investigation concluded that the fire had been deliberately set.
According to court records, the suspect and the roommate had been involved in an ongoing dispute. Investigators allege the fire was intentionally started shortly after the roommate obtained a protection-from-abuse order against the suspect.
Police later arrested the woman and charged her with felony arson, recklessly endangering another person, criminal mischief, and harassment.
Quick Response Prevented Greater Damage
Authorities said the fast activation of smoke alarms and the quick actions of those inside the residence helped prevent the fire from spreading throughout the home.
Although the mattress and parts of the room sustained damage, officials said the fire was contained before it could engulf the entire residence. No life-threatening injuries were reported.
Emergency responders praised the prompt response of the occupants, noting that early detection played a key role in avoiding a more serious outcome.

The accused was taken into custody following the investigation and is expected to appear in court to answer the charges.
