In his ongoing State of the Union address, Donald Trump delivered a wide-ranging speech focused on the economy, jobs, taxes, energy, and national policy priorities, repeatedly telling lawmakers and viewers that the United States is experiencing renewed momentum.
Opening his remarks, Trump said the country has moved from decline to strength, declaring that “a short time ago we were a dead country” but now the United States is “the hottest country anywhere in the world.” He pointed to lower gas prices and claimed the U.S. economy has recovered within three months, while also arguing inflation is declining after what he described as a historically high period under the Biden Administration.
Economy, Jobs and Inflation Claims
Trump emphasized employment as a central achievement, saying more Americans are working today than ever before and that most job growth has come from the private sector. He added that mortgage rates are at their lowest level in four years and that the typical annual cost of a new mortgage has dropped by nearly $5,000 since he took office.
The president also said core inflation has fallen to its lowest level in more than five years, noting that during the final three months of 2025 it reached 1.7%. Trump further claimed the U.S. stock market has performed strongly during his administration, framing market gains as evidence of economic confidence.
Energy, Oil Production and “Drill Baby Drill”
Energy policy remained a major theme throughout the address. Trump said U.S. oil production has increased and repeated his “drill baby drill” message to expand domestic output. He also stated that the United States has received more than 80 million barrels of oil from Venezuela, describing the country as a new partner, while adding that American oil production has risen significantly.
Trump argued that expanded energy production is helping lower costs, strengthen economic growth, and improve national security.
Tax Plans and Major Policy Announcements
During the speech, Trump outlined several tax proposals and economic initiatives, including:
- No tax on tips
- No tax on overtime
- No tax on interest for American-made car loans
- Expansion of the Child Tax Credit
He also proposed that tariffs paid by foreign countries could replace income tax, saying the approach would reduce the financial burden on Americans. While defending tariffs, Trump criticized a recent Supreme Court ruling related to tariff authority, calling the decision “very unfortunate” but signaling that new trade deals remain possible.
Trump additionally announced a retirement initiative allowing working Americans to access a plan that matches contributions by up to $1,000 annually.
Social Programs, Public Safety and Cities
Trump said his administration would protect Social Security and Medicare, emphasizing support for seniors. He also spoke about public safety, stating that the flow of fentanyl into the United States has dropped by 56% and arguing that major cities, including Los Angeles, will become safer.
Throughout the speech, Trump repeatedly said the country is “winning again,” telling lawmakers that Americans are expressing growing confidence.
Recognition, Events and Political Moments
During the address, Trump welcomed the U.S. Ice Hockey Team into the House chamber and thanked Petty Officer Scott Ruskan and other service members for saving lives. He said government should remain focused on the welfare of citizens and pledged to build a nation where government answers to the people.
The president also highlighted future national events, noting that the Olympic Games will be held in the United States in 2028 when the Olympic torch is lit in Los Angeles.
The speech included moments of political tension. Democratic Congressman Al Green of Texas was escorted out after holding up a protest sign referencing a controversial social media post, prompting chants from parts of the chamber as Trump continued speaking.
Trade, Tariffs and Second-Term Messaging
Trump used the address to defend tariffs as a core economic strategy, arguing that foreign countries had previously taken advantage of the United States. He said tariffs are designed to strengthen domestic industry and shift financial responsibility toward trading partners.
He also reflected on his second term, saying his first year should be considered a continuation of earlier work, while emphasizing that major legislation — including what he described as a “Great Big Beautiful Bill” — has delivered significant relief to Americans.
Address Still Underway
As the State of the Union address continues, Trump’s remarks remain centered on economic performance, tax relief, energy expansion, trade policy, and public safety. The speech is expected to continue with additional policy details and political messaging as lawmakers from both parties respond to the president’s agenda.
