Every year, the nation’s top young spellers converge for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, one of the most intense academic competitions around. And the 2024 edition did not disappoint, with an epic showdown that required a dramatic tiebreaker to crown a new champion.

After three grueling days of onstage spelling in the Washington D.C. area, it came down to two 12-year-old prodigies – Bruhat Soma from Tampa, Florida and Faizan Zaki from Plano, Texas. In a first for the scripps national spelling bee 2024, officials instituted a “spell-off” to break the deadlock between these two brilliant young wordsmiths.

The Spell-Off Showdown

When neither Bruhat nor Faizan missed a word through 14 conventional rounds, Scripps National Spelling Bee organizers made the unprecedented decision to move directly to a spell-off tiebreaker. This intense format gives each finalist just 90 seconds to spell as many words as possible in a rapid-fire string of prompts.

Faizan went first, asking the judges for a moment to take some deep breaths and steady his nerves. When the clock started, he tore through 20 words successfully before stumbling on the 21st.Then it was Bruhat’s turn. The young man from Florida didn’t even flinch, immediately launching into an astonishing streak of 29 words spelled flawlessly in under 90 seconds. When he nailed the final word “daena,” the crowd erupted and Bruhat’s name was permanently etched into spelling bee history.

“My heart was pumping so fast when I realized I won,” Bruhat said after his victory. “I had a good feeling I would win because I did pretty good, but yeah, you never know. I still couldn’t absorb the moment yet.

“For his incredible performance, Bruhat took home the prestigious Scripps Cup trophy along with more than $50,000 in cash and prizes. But the journey to this moment was years in the making.

Bruhat’s Pathway to Spelling Supremacy

Even before arriving at the national spelling bee 2024, Bruhat had already established himself as one of the hottest spellers on the circuit. He entered the Bee riding an unbeaten streak, having won three consecutive major competitions leading up to the big event.

“I always want to win. And this was, like, my main goal,” Bruhat explained. “It didn’t matter if I won all those other bees. This is what I was aiming for. So I’m just really happy that I won this.”Bruhat’s coach Sam Evans, himself a former elite speller, wasn’t surprised at all to see his student capture the national title. “He’s certainly very, very good at [spell-offs],” Evans said. “I’m not surprised to see how well he did tonight.

“In fact, Bruhat had been specifically training for the potential of a spell-off by doing practice drills with his father using specialized computer software. “Every day, [my dad] used a program to pronounce words in 90-second sprints to emulate the spell-off,” Bruhat revealed. All that preparation paid off when Scripps officials unexpectedly called for the spell-off to decide the 2024 champion. While it was new territory for the Bee, Bruhat was ready. “I really wanted all of this, but you could never expect it,” he said, admitting even he was a bit shocked at how things unfolded.

The 2024 Bee By the Numbers

The scripps national spelling bee is always a massive undertaking, with spellers from across the United States and around the world converging to test their mettle. This year’s stats were:

  • 245 total spellers from all 50 states plus other countries
  • 97 spellers eliminated in the preliminary rounds on Tuesday
  • 45 advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday
  • Only 8 finalists made it to the primetime finals on Thursday

Bruhat and Faizan survived an absolutely stacked field of elite spellers to make it to their dramatic spell-off showdown. And despite being 12 years old, Bruhat already has his sights set on defending his title in 2025.”I feel ecstatic,” he said when asked about his victory. “I don’t know the entire dictionary, and I’m not even close to that. But I knew all of my words this week.”

Bruhat’s Winning Strategy

So what’s the secret to Bruhat’s incredible spelling prowess? A few key strategies and habits:

  1. He “types” words with his left hand on an imaginary keyboard to help cement them.
  2. Rather than trying to memorize the entire dictionary, he focuses on studying and mastering the word sections most likely to appear at the national level.
  3. His memory is off the charts, a huge advantage in competitive spelling. “His memory’s just so good and that certainly helps him with spelling,” Evans noted.
  4. He practices constantly, putting in hours upon hours of repetition and drilling rather than just cramming for each competition.

“To be consistent throughout the whole year and to work towards a goal like he has, it’s something that makes him really special,” Evans said of his student. “His work ethic is really the reason why he’s standing up there holding the trophy.

“While Bruhat makes spelling look easy, his coach is quick to emphasize that anybody can improve at the skill with the right approach and mindset.

“You don’t have to be naturally gifted,” Evans stated. “Anybody can devote a few days or weeks to practicing spelling. But [Bruhat’s] dedication was different.”

The Spelling Bee Tradition Continues

With Bruhat Soma’s historic spell-off victory, the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee instantly carved out a memorable place in the competition’s storied 96-year history. And despite being just 12 years old, the young champion is already setting his sights on more spelling glory.

“I knew all of my words,” he said confidently when asked about the toughest word he received. “So I don’t really know [which was hardest].”That kind of mastery and self-assurance is what separates the great spellers from the good ones. And you can bet Bruhat will be back, looking to ride his unbeaten streak to another national title in 2025.The scripps spelling bee has been crowning word wizards since 1925. But with the introduction of the spell-off tiebreaker and Bruhat’s epic performance, the 2024 edition raised the bar for excitement and drama.

If you’re a fan of academic competitions or just admire incredible feats of memory and language skills, make sure to tune in next year. Because if Bruhat’s encore is anything like his national debut, you won’t want to miss it.
