NASCAR points standings continue to put Denny Hamlin at the top after Joey Logano’s dramatic victory at Richmond Raceway, with only two regular-season races remaining before the 16-driver Chase field is set.
The Cook Out 400 produced a major shift in the championship picture. Logano held off Chase Briscoe by 0.392 seconds to claim his second Cup Series victory of 2026. The win also moved Logano from 13th to ninth in the standings.
Hamlin remains first with 969 points. Ryan Blaney has moved into second with 854, while Ty Gibbs is third with 842. Tyler Reddick holds fourth with 831.
The battle behind them is becoming even more important. Drivers from the middle of the field are fighting for valuable Chase positions, while Ryan Preece and several others remain outside the top 16 and need strong results in the final two races.
Denny Hamlin Remains the Driver to Beat
Denny Hamlin continues to control the championship picture with 969 points after 24 races.
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver finished fourth at Richmond, adding another strong result to a remarkably consistent season. He now has a 115-point advantage over Blaney.
Hamlin’s 2026 season has been built around consistency as much as outright victories. He has four wins, 14 top-five finishes and 16 top-10 results through Richmond.
That consistency has allowed him to maintain a sizeable advantage even while other championship contenders have moved up and down the table.
Hamlin also has the opportunity to finish the regular season as the top-ranked driver. That position would give him the strongest starting position when the Chase begins.
The regular-season lead will not transfer directly into the postseason standings, but it will provide an important points advantage.
Ryan Blaney Takes Second Place
Ryan Blaney is now second with 854 points.
The Team Penske driver started from the pole at Richmond and dominated the opening stage. He led 60 of the first 70 laps and earned his sixth stage win of the season.
Blaney ultimately finished 13th, but his early performance helped him collect important points.
His result was enough to move him ahead of Gibbs in the championship table.
Blaney now trails Hamlin by 115 points while holding a 12-point advantage over Gibbs. The gap shows how important the final two regular-season races could be.
A strong performance at New Hampshire could allow Blaney to close the distance to Hamlin while protecting his position ahead of Gibbs.
Ty Gibbs Holds Third
Ty Gibbs enters the final stretch of the regular season in third place with 842 points.
Gibbs had moved into second following his victory at Iowa Speedway. Richmond, however, brought a more difficult night.
A speeding penalty during the race affected his progress, and he finished 15th.
That result allowed Blaney to move back into second.
Still, Gibbs remains firmly among the leading championship contenders. He is only 12 points behind Blaney and 127 points behind Hamlin.
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has two victories this season and has established himself as one of the strongest performers in the 2026 field.
His immediate objective is clear: regain second place and reduce the gap to Hamlin before the regular season ends.
Tyler Reddick Stays Fourth
Tyler Reddick remains fourth with 831 points.
The driver has five wins this season, the highest total among the current top four. Yet his points position demonstrates why consistency matters throughout a full Cup Series campaign.
Reddick has 10 top-five finishes and 14 top-10 results through 24 races.
His recent results have been mixed. After a difficult 36th-place finish at Iowa, he rebounded with an 11th-place result at Richmond.
That recovery helped him remain fourth.
Reddick is 11 points behind Gibbs and 23 points ahead of Chase Briscoe, making fourth place another close battle heading into the final regular-season races.
Chase Briscoe Delivers a Strong Richmond Performance
Chase Briscoe finished second at Richmond and strengthened his position in fifth place.
He has 715 points.
Briscoe led a race-high 171 laps and remained in contention for the win during the closing stages. Logano ultimately took the victory, but Briscoe’s runner-up finish provided a major points boost.
He is now 23 points behind Reddick and 20 points ahead of the drivers tied for sixth.
Briscoe’s Richmond performance also confirmed his position as one of the strongest drivers heading toward the Chase.
His combination of speed, stage points and race finishes has kept him comfortably inside the top 16.
Elliott and Bell Are Tied
Chase Elliott and Christopher Bell are tied with 695 points.
Elliott currently holds sixth place, while Bell is seventh.
Elliott finished fifth at Richmond, giving him another strong result as the regular season approaches its conclusion.
Bell finished seventh and also remained firmly positioned inside the Chase field.
The two drivers have taken different paths to the same points total. Elliott has two wins and six top-five finishes, while Bell has no victories but 10 top-five finishes.
Their positions show the value of consistent finishing results.
With two races remaining, both drivers have an opportunity to improve their regular-season seeding.
Kyle Larson Remains in the Top 10
Kyle Larson is eighth with 660 points.
Larson finished sixth at Richmond and moved into a stronger position in the standings.
He now sits only one point behind Logano.
Larson has eight top-five finishes and 12 top-10 results through the first 24 races.
Although he has not won a Cup Series race this season, his overall consistency has kept him near the front of the championship battle.
The remaining races could be particularly important for his postseason starting position.

Joey Logano’s Richmond Win Changes the Picture
Joey Logano was the biggest mover among the championship contenders at Richmond.
The three-time Cup Series champion led 95 laps and held off Briscoe to secure his second win of the 2026 season.
The victory was Logano’s second in his last four races.
His turnaround has been remarkable. He had fallen as low as 20th in the standings earlier in the season. Now he sits ninth with 659 points.
That nine-position improvement has completely changed his Chase outlook.
Logano is also only one point behind Larson and six points behind Bell and Elliott.
The No. 22 Team Penske Ford has suddenly become one of the cars to watch as the postseason approaches.
Chris Buescher Holds 10th
Chris Buescher occupies 10th place with 653 points.
He remains ahead of Carson Hocevar, who has 645 points.
Buescher’s position gives him a solid place inside the current Chase field, but the final two races remain important for his postseason seeding.
The difference between Buescher and Logano is only six points.
A strong result at New Hampshire could allow Buescher to move back into the top nine.
At the same time, Hocevar remains close enough to put pressure on him.
Carson Hocevar Remains in the Chase Field
Carson Hocevar is 11th with 645 points.
Richmond was a difficult race for Hocevar. He was involved in an accident and was the lone driver listed as a DNF from the event.
Despite the setback, he remains inside the top 16.
That position is important because the Chase field is determined after the regular season. Hocevar cannot afford another major points loss with the cutoff battle approaching its final stage.
He currently has a 71-point advantage over Ryan Preece, who is 17th.
William Byron Sits 12th
William Byron is 12th with 630 points.
His position places him 15 points behind Hocevar and 35 points ahead of Bubba Wallace.
Byron has remained a regular presence near the front of the standings throughout the season.
The final two races provide an opportunity to improve his seeding before the Chase begins.
A move up the table could provide a better starting points position for the championship battle.
Daniel Suárez Holds 13th
Daniel Suárez has 618 points and sits 13th.
He currently has a 31-point advantage over Wallace in 14th.
Suárez’s position is important because the Chase cutline is beginning to take shape behind him.
He needs to protect his points total while also looking for opportunities to move higher.
A strong finish at New Hampshire could create additional separation from the drivers outside the top 16.
Bubba Wallace and Austin Cindric Remain Inside the Top 16
Bubba Wallace is 14th with 587 points.
Austin Cindric is 15th with 574.
Cindric produced one of the most valuable results among the Chase contenders at Richmond. He finished third after starting 23rd and gained significant ground during the opening pit cycle.
That result moved him from 16th to 15th.
The improvement gives Cindric more breathing room heading into the final two races.
Wallace also remains in a strong position, but the final stage of the regular season will continue to put pressure on drivers near the cutoff.
Shane van Gisbergen Holds the Final Spot
Shane van Gisbergen currently occupies 16th with 567 points.
He finished 14th at Richmond and retained the final position in the Chase field.
The 50-point gap between van Gisbergen and Ryan Preece is now one of the most important numbers in the championship battle.
Van Gisbergen cannot simply rely on his current position. Two races remain, and a major points swing could change the order.
The driver will need to maintain strong finishes while collecting stage points whenever possible.
Ryan Preece Leads the Drivers Outside the Top 16
Ryan Preece is 17th with 517 points.
He is 50 points behind van Gisbergen and currently leads the drivers trying to break into the Chase field.
Ross Chastain follows in 18th with 504 points.
Brad Keselowski is 19th with 489, while Erik Jones is 20th with 486.
The gap between 16th and 20th is only 81 points.
That makes the battle below the cutoff worth watching closely during the final two regular-season races.
Preece has the strongest position among the drivers outside the field, but he must gain points while hoping drivers ahead of him lose ground.
The Chase Cutline Is the Main Story
The current cutline sits between van Gisbergen in 16th and Preece in 17th.
A 50-point gap separates them.
That is enough to give van Gisbergen some security, but it is not an insurmountable advantage over two races.
The next race at New Hampshire will be especially important because it gives Preece an immediate opportunity to reduce the deficit.
Daytona will then provide the final chance before the regular-season standings are locked.
For every driver near the cutoff, stage points can become just as valuable as the final finishing position.
Two Regular-Season Races Remain
The Cup Series now heads toward New Hampshire Motor Speedway on August 23.
That race will be followed by the regular-season finale at Daytona International Speedway on August 29.
After Daytona, the top 16 drivers in points will enter the 10-race Chase.
The Chase begins at Darlington Raceway on September 6.
The final two races therefore carry significance for both qualification and seeding.
Drivers already comfortably inside the top 16 will want to protect their positions. Those near the cutoff will be focused on gaining every available point.

The current table shows a clear divide between the leading championship contenders and the drivers fighting for the final Chase places.
Hamlin has created the largest cushion at the top. Blaney and Gibbs are close behind, while Reddick remains within striking distance.

At the bottom of the Chase field, van Gisbergen has a 50-point advantage over Preece.
