A Panel Built Entirely on Champions
Season 29 features a panel of three coaches, all of whom have previously won the show. John Legend returns for his eleventh season after sitting out last season. Kelly Clarkson is back for her tenth season, having last coached during Season 23. And Adam Levine — one of the original faces of The Voice — returns for his eighteenth season after also taking a one-season break.
This is the first time in the show’s history that every coach on the panel carries a championship title. Clarkson has won four times, Levine has three wins, and Legend has won as well— making this lineup a true gathering of proven champions.
Carson Daly returns as host for the 29th consecutive season, making him the only original cast member to appear in every season of the show.
Why Only Three Coaches This Season?
The Voice has always featured four coaches on the panel, but NBC decided to reduce the size of the judging panel for 2026. The NBA is partially to blame — NBC is bringing NBA games back into the primetime lineup, which gave The Voice considerably less airtime than in previous seasons.
Showrunner Audrey Morrissey addressed the decision directly, explaining that with fewer hours available, keeping four coaches would have left teams too small to be competitive.
Each coach will get 10 singers on their team, for a total of 30 contestants — a significant drop from the 48 featured in recent seasons. The leaner format, however, has raised the stakes for every contestant who does make it through.
The “Battle of Champions” Format Explained
The new subtitle isn’t just a marketing move — it reflects a genuinely revamped competition structure. The “Battle of Champions” format runs through four distinct rounds, each featuring a first for the show. During the Blind Auditions, coaches compete against each other in a “Triple Turn Competition,” vying for the most three-chair turns. The winner gains a special advantage heading into the next round. In the Battles, the coach with the most three-chair turns automatically earns a “Super Steal” — a prize that can only be used once and overrides any other coach’s steal attempt.
The Knockouts round adds yet another wrinkle. Each coach brings back two fan-favorite artists from their past teams to compete in an “In-Season All-Star Competition.” These former artists represent their coaches in head-to-head sing-offs, and the coach with the most wins is guaranteed a second finalist in the finale. Original Voice coach CeeLo Green returns to determine the winner of each All-Star Showdown.
Returning for Team Kelly are Girl Named Tom and Jake Hoot. For Team Legend, it’s Maelyn Jarmon and Renzo. For Team Adam, Jordan Smith and Javier Colon are back.
A New Voice in the Building
Comedian Druski joined The Voice this season as the show’s first-ever commentator — a brand-new role that adds personality and entertainment value to the broadcast beyond the traditional coach-and-host dynamic.
How Voting Works This Season
One of the most surprising changes this year involves how winners are chosen. Viewers at home will not be able to cast votes during the semifinals and finals. Instead, voting is in the hands of a studio audience made up of super fans and former contestants, who will cast their votes in real time with results revealed on the spot.
