A typical day at the beach turned into a scene of chaos and emergency as Walton County, Florida, experienced two shark attacks within a mere 90-minute window on Friday. The incidents, occurring just four miles apart, left three individuals injured and have raised concerns about beach safety and shark activity in the area.
The First Attack: Watersound Beach
The first attack was reported just after 1:15 p.m. near Watersound Way and Coopersmith Lane. A 45-year-old woman, swimming just past the first sandbar with her husband, was bitten by a shark. The attack caused significant trauma to her midsection and pelvic area, and resulted in the amputation of her left lower arm. The woman, in critical condition, was quickly airlifted to a local trauma facility for urgent treatment.
The Second Attack: Seacrest Beach
Less than two hours later, at approximately 2:55 p.m., the second attack took place at Sandy Shores Court in Seacrest Beach. Two teenage girls, aged between 15 and 17, were attacked while in waist-deep water with a group of friends. One of the teenagers sustained significant injuries to her upper leg and one hand, while the other suffered minor injuries to one foot. The quick response by first responders ensured the injured received immediate medical attention.

In the wake of these attacks, Walton County officials acted swiftly to prevent further incidents. Beach flags were changed to double red, signaling that the water was closed for swimming. Lifeguards and beach deputies have been actively patrolling the area to ensure beachgoers stay out of the water. “We are encouraging beachgoers to be cognizant that lifeguards and beach deputies may be trying to keep people out of the water in the immediate area,” stated the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson addressed the media, stating that authorities are consulting with experts to determine if there is an anomalous cause behind these attacks. “We don’t think there is, but we certainly want to be diligent,” Adkinson said. “We know we share the water with sharks, we understand that as tragic as this is, there are always sharks.”

Despite the low risk, Florida consistently tops global charts for shark bite incidents. In 2023, the state reported 16 unprovoked shark bites, representing 44% of the United States total and 23% worldwide. Notably, no fatalities were reported in Florida last year due to shark attacks.
